Role & Timeline
UX Designer & Project Lead
From Sep 2022 - Dec 2022
Overview
I co-founded AceSpace with 3 other people, who helped start the development of the app. AceSpace is a platform that allows volleyball players to relive key moments, provide feedback, and obtain tips regarding their techniques during the game. AceSpace will accommodate the needs of users to share and store digital media, facilitating the process for players to improve their skills on and off the court.
Execution
Problem
There is a lack of collaborative learning among recreational volleyball players as they struggle in finding ways to receive critical feedback and lack a place lack a place where to store and share their most memorable games.
How can we design a tool that helps recreational volleyball players receive feedback and keep track of their progress?
Solution
AceSpace allows volleyball players to easily point out highlights of the game, key strategies, and techniques that will enhance their overall experience and accelerate their improvement process.
Design Process
Research
Goals
-
Study interactions among recreational volleyball players
-
Understand the needs and challenges players face when trying to receive and provide feedback
-
Analyze the tools that are being currently used by volleyball players
Methods
-
Observational studies carried out in volleyball courts located inside college campuses
-
Short interview with recreational volleyball players
Draft Claim Analysis
I gathered the major moments from our problem scenarios to understand the struggles and positive interactions among recreational volleyball players
+ Positive experiences/interactions that can be enhanced
- Negative experiences/interactions that can be improved
Designing
Design Opportunities
• Supplement sport learning beyond smart devices such as apple watch and fitness tracker
• Avoid messaging apps to communicate with fellow players
• Avoid high storage of videos on user's devices
• Implement a technological environment inside the courts
• Encourage peer learning from multiple skill levels
• Find all related-volleyball content and keep track of your personal progress inside the court
Screen Requirements
• The screen will display the user's profile along with the date their video was recorded on
• Users can click on flagged timestamps of the game.
• Different colors categorize whether the video clip has positive or negative criticism
• Buttons allowing the user to go to the next timestamp, go back to the previous timestamp, or return to the home screen
• The option to upload more videos or view highlights from previous uploads
• The option to upload the video privately or publicly for other users to view and comment
Refinement
AceSpace will be divided into two main actions: Giving and receiving feedback. Users will be able to interact with other players' posts and provide feedback, as well as create their own posts where they request feedback from other players
I translated the flow into low-fidelity sketches to start user-testing
After user testing, I revised the user flow and started working on the final prototype
• Users prefer color coding to differentiate positive and negative reviews
• The reviewer needs to highlight parts of the clip to give feedback
• The reviewer needs a court map to highlight locations on the map
• The 5-start rating system received positive feedback for quick reviews
• Users were positive about integrating other technological devices into their AceSpace experience
